What is Renters Insurance?

Renters insurance, also known as an HO-4 policy, is designed for people who rent apartments, houses, or condominiums. It provides coverage for the renter’s personal property and liability, but does not cover the physical structure of the building, which is the landlord’s responsibility.

Coverages typically included in a renter’s insurance policy are:

1. Personal Property Coverage:
– Covers the cost to repair or replace the renter’s personal belongings if they are damaged, destroyed, or stolen due to covered perils.
– Covered perils usually include fire, lightning, windstorm, hail, explosion, riot, aircraft, vehicles, smoke, vandalism, theft, falling objects, weight of ice, snow or sleet, and water damage (from plumbing, heating or air conditioning overflow).
– Certain types of property, such as jewelry, furs, firearms, and electronics, may have coverage limits and require additional riders for full coverage.

2. Liability Coverage:
– Provides protection if someone is injured while in the renter’s home or if the renter accidentally injures someone.
– Covers legal defense costs and any damages the renter is required to pay, up to the policy limit.

3. Additional Living Expenses (ALE):
– If the rented home becomes uninhabitable due to a covered loss, ALE pays for temporary living expenses such as hotel bills and meals.

5. Intentional Damage or Injury: Losses caused by the intentional actions of the policyholder are not covered.
